August is shaping up as one of the busiest months in the cosmos for 2017. We’ve already experienced one eclipse, a lunar event in Aquarius on the 7th, with a whopping solar eclipse in Leo arriving on Monday the 21st. And what’s happening smack dab in the middle of the eclipses? Mercury going retrograde, which happened on August 12th.
That’s right, the royal screwer-upper of the solar system has reversed its course. If you really become panic stricken over this, perhaps you shouldn’t read any further. I’ll give you time to close your browser…..OK, now we’ve got the braver souls only. What’s the reason for the (tongue in cheek) warning? Mercury will start to backspin in Virgo, the house of efficiency.
Virgo, as just about everyone knows, is the nit picker of the zodiac. The perfectionist. The person who hands in all of their work on time (hell, early even!) with no mistakes. The guy or gal with excellent habits—you know, the kind that has their desk cleared off every night before they leave the office. The kind that doesn’t have empty Starbucks cups and dirty clothes all over the back seat of their car. Please—there’s no dust in their car, let alone trash.
Virgo is also the sector that governs health habits, the real sexy stuff like flossing your teeth nightly, getting a colonoscopy every five years, dieting and working out at 6 am. Yup, this is the house of taking personal responsibility and our old buddy Mercury is sliding backward in it—which means that you could start to backslide too.
As a result, between now and August 31st you’ll need to work harder and display more discipline with ye old diet and workout plan. Partying every night and coming in to work hung over is not a good plan, nor is ignoring nagging health issues. Slacking off at the office is not advised, but the reality may be that it’s your co-workers who are the ones with the sloth-like attitude rather than you.
What many people don’t realize, though, is that a Mercury retrograde period can be a blessing in disguise. This happens about four times a year, and it’s the cosmos’s way of forcing us to slow down and examine our methods. Mercury, after all, is the planet of intelligence and strategizing, so when it back pedals we’re being given the opportunity to really think about what we’re doing right, and what we’re doing wrong.
In this case, it’s our habits and routines both at home and at work, everything from how effective we are with getting the food shopping done to whether our workout regimen is really the best one for our needs. It’s about how we handle work flow at the office. If you own your own business, this retrograde period is super important because it will provide you with insight about your methods. Anyone who is a supervisor will need to take a good hard look at employees or contractors who aren’t up to snuff. Consider new software or apps that will make things flow more efficiently.
Could things get screwed up? Sure. A client claims that they never got the contract or proposal that you e-mailed to them. Or they nitpick over every bloody detail of it, slowing down the progress of a deal. A health problem that you thought was over makes another appearance. By the way, this doesn’t refer to major health problems (like cancer) as they are governed by a different house. Rather, it’s the “lower level” vitality suckers like allergies, sciatica or headaches. If you have a sports or other injury from the past, be careful as it could reoccur.
Pets are a part of this sector, so make sure that you’re taking good care of their health as well. If it’s time for a check-up or their annual shots, take them to the vet. And if you have kids, be advised that they might want to bring home every stray in the neighborhood—like your friendly astrologer here, who used to catch snakes in the woods (true story, don’t know what I was thinking) and then bring them home and try to smuggle them up to her room. And who subsequently got caught.
One of the issues with the Mercury retrograde period is that murky Neptune is opposing it, which means that the BS or confusion could be waist deep—from the customer service people at your health care provider, for example, or your slacker co-workers who may try to pass the buck to you. Not to get too intense here, but Neptune is in the house of hidden enemies, while Virgo is the house of the people whom you know for sure oppose you!
So you have this intense “who can I trust?” vibe going on, not so much with a lover, family members or friends, but with clients, colleagues and health care providers. It’s unlikely that a health care professional would intentionally mislead someone. But if you hear something you don’t like from a doctor, it may be time to seek a second opinion.
Then on the 31st of August, Mercury continues its backspin, leaving Virgo and treading through Leo until September 5th at which time it will resume direct motion. This could trigger drama in romance, which includes the return of an ex. On September 9th Mercury goes back into Virgo again where it will remain until September 29th.
As you can see, the cosmos is hell bent on making us getting our acts together with chores, routines and health matters in August and September. The smart way to finesse the Mercury retrograde period in August is to switch up your methods. Change your diet, try a different workout plan, order groceries online, start going to bed earlier, empty out your e-mail account (then stay on top of it), book doctor and vet appointments, get an app that does what it promises and clean up unfinished tasks.
We humans are creatures of habit and it’s so easy to get stuck in some that simply aren’t working for us any longer. If you are serious about changing yours, then I highly recommend this book (which I listened to on Audible): The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It was a real eye opener, and the good news is that habits are easy to change if you know how they are created, and the rewards you need to set in place in order to make them stick—which he goes into in great detail!
