It sure looks that way! Or did we enter that age back in the 60s, when hippies discovered astrology, psychic phenomena, gurus from India (and psychedelic mushrooms)? This is a big subject of debate in the astrology world, but no one can refute this fact: Jupiter and Saturn both enter Aquarius this week for an unusual sojourn. So get ready, groovy people – – the times, they are a’ changin’.
Way back in the day–1967, to be exact–two songwriters penned a tune called ” Aquarius”. Here are the opening bars of the song, which became a magic major hit in the spring of 1969, a few months before the Woodstock Festival:
“When the moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars…. then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius…
Harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abounding. No more falsehoods or derisions. Golden living dreams of visions, mystic crystal revelation and the mind’s true liberation, Aquarius…”
Make no mistake about it, the hippies were seriously into astrology. They were also proponents of equal rights, abolishing racism and protecting the planet. They were anti-government and distrusted big corporations. Hippies protested loudly against the Vietnam war and police brutality here at home. Their goal was to bring power back to the people, but not the strong-arm kind. Rather, the peaceful variety.
Back then many people believed that the Age of Aquarius had already begun. Others said “no, we have a ways to go yet”. But that didn’t stop the people who promoted the Woodstock music jam from calling it an “Aquarian exposition”.
What I find so interesting is that the same causes the hippies fought for are now back on the front burner, just as mighty Saturn and jovial Jupiter enter Aquarius this week.
Aquarius is the sign that brings power to the masses. After all, this is the sign of friends and mentors, wise old sages and brilliant young minds as well. Since the Internet and other forms of technology link people together, the digital world is part of Aquarius’s domain. Humanitarian efforts are its forte, as Aquarian energy is all about getting past your needs and helping others.
All of this is good news for a world that is weary of self-isolation and anger played out on a public stage. A lot of healing needs to take place, whether it’s dealing with Covid, racism or the stress we humans are placing on the planet.
Saturn enters Aquarius on Thursday, December 17th. Jupiter arrives a mere two days later on Saturday. As a result, they will begin their trip through Aquarius in a very tight angle to each other. On December 21st, Jupiter catches up with Saturn and they form a conjunction.
This is when two or more planets line up perfectly, one behind the other. If you go outside and look up into the heavens, Jupiter will be right in front of Saturn, possibly appearing as one bright star in the sky.
Take a look at this skymap (from my fave site, Sky and Telescope). This shows how close Saturn and Jupiter were back on December 4th. Over the past two weeks they have been inching even closer to each other. By the 21st, they will be aligned. So go outside and look into the night sky! Don’t sweat it if you have clouds or bad weather on the 21st; these two will be traveling close to one another for weeks, so you’ll be able to catch it.
Conjunctions are significant in astrology because they take the energy of both planets and fuse them together. What’s so important about this particular conjunction is that Saturn and Jupiter have not aligned this closely since 1623!
Note that this occurs on the winter solstice if you live north of the equator, whereas it’s the summer solstice Down Under. Solstices are always turning points, not only in the natural world but the astrological one.
So what kind of energy do these planets have? Well, Saturn is the stern taskmaster, the planet of discipline and hard work. It wants the best for us but recognizes that the school of hard knocks is often where we need to get our education.
On the other hand, Jupiter is all about ease and happiness. To be honest, Jupiter would rather sit back and rub Aladdin’s lamp and tell the genie what it wants! So when these two form a conjunction, you have a trade-off.
Jupiter loves to take chances, as this is the planet of optimism and enterprise. Saturn is more cautious and thoughtful. Whereas Jupiter wants to think that nothing can stop you, Saturn rushes in and says, “oh, really?”
So the great conjunction on December 21st is an opportune time for thinking in a visionary way, yet a practical one. Because Aquarian energy prods us to think beyond our own needs and goals, this is an important time for considering how you, as an individual, can give back to this wonderful planet that we inhabit.
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with wanting good things for yourself. But Aquarius is all about cooperation and teamwork. You know what they say: “it takes teamwork make the dream work”, and that pretty much sums up what’s going on right now. Whether you’re trying to improve your own personal life or that of the world in general, you’ll get further the more you bring in the ideas, emotions and energy of others.
Jupiter and Saturn will travel through Aquarius for most of 2021, with Jupiter eventually outpacing the ringed planet before it moves into Pisces in 2022. There is a time period from May 13 to July 28 in which these two won’t be in sync, but nonetheless the year ahead is superb for working with a tribe.
Every sign of the zodiac will be affected differently by Saturn and Jupiter’s move into Aquarius. As an example, Aquarius is Leo’s seventh house of serious relationships. This is the best time in 26 years for a lion to find love! Aquarius happens to be Capricorn’s second house of earning and saving more money, making 2021-2023 a powerful time for sea goats to become big earners.
